Happy Wednesday folks. I’m on my way out to San Jose, CA to visit the mother ship (Adobe HQ). But I wanted to let you know that the Lightroom 2.4 update is out (and Camera Raw 5.4). Its mainly a camera update (D5000 support woo hoo!!!) but there’s some minor bug fixes as well. • Ricoh’s new, compact CX1 camera offers “a dynamic range double shot mode.” This mode “takes two images in succession with different exposures and then combines them automatically to present the best of both images.” DPReview offers additional details. Very cool. It’s rare that I need much more than the 8MP offered by my slightly aged SLR, but I’d always like less noise and greater dynamic range. I’d love a future cam that could shoot high resolution when desired, but if necessary shoot with lower res/broader dynamic range. [Via Jerry Harris]
• HDRsoft, makers of the popular Photomatix Pro, offer a Lightroom export plug-in. They’ve just posted a step-by-step tutorial showing how to send multiple images from LR to Photomatix for processing, then automatically pull the results back into your LR library. (Note the little “Next” arrow up top for navigating to subsequent pages.) [Via Tom Hogarty]

Most of you use Photoshop right? That means you’re probably used to the fact that Photoshop gives you 20 undos by default. So if you do more then 20 things to your photo, Photoshop drops the earlier ones and you’ll eventually not be able to undo (you’d basically have to start over if you needed to get back). Now you can change that in Photoshop’s Performance preferences but what about Lightroom? How does it handle undos? It’s easy actually. Every single thing you do is tracked in the History panel (in the Develop module). Whether you’ve made 5 changes or 500 they’ll all be listed there. Even better, when you close Photoshop, all of our undos go away. But when you close Lightroom they stay put. Even if you opened Lightroom to work on a photo a year later, when you come back you’ll always be able to undo what you did in that History panel. Go check it out next time you work on a photo that’s been in your library for a while and you’ll see what I mean.

Here are some interesting things that are happening in the Lightroom world at the moment.

There’s a lot of interest in being able to export with a directory structure intact. Over at Lightroom forums, there’s a post on just such an export plugin. It does work, although it seems to add an extra folder called ers on Mac. Check it out!

Matt Kloskowski has posted new free presets over at Lightroom Killer Tips. These High Key presets come in 3 flavours and are worth checking out.

Speaking of free presets, my own batch of grunge presets LRB Dragan are now up on Adobe Exchange for Lightroom.

Rich Cooper aka mountainstorm has updated his Tether programs and is looking for feedback on them. While these work with most Nikons, Canon compatibility on newer cameras is not there due to Canon changing communication protocol recently. Any camera that has a PTP mode should work with it.

Timothy Armes is now distributing via The Photographers Toolbox. We interviewed Tim recently and wish him well as he takes his great products further. The distribution brings with it a serial number mechanism, to prevent confusion between trial and full versions.

As part of Photoshop World, Martin Evening and Jeff Schewe will be giving seminars. Both Martin and Jeff are members of the NAPP Photoshop Hall of Fame, as well as being editors in chief here at Lightroom News. There’s a $100 discount offer running currently until the 20th Feb, so time is running out.

I periodically get questions about whether Adobe-oriented groups exist in a certain region, about how to start up such a group, etc. Now the company has launched groups.adobe.com, a resource meant to ‘give the Adobe community a place to connect, find one another, and locate communities of people who share their interests.’ Community mgr. Rachel Luxemburg talks about how the site works & how to get started.

The Camera Raw 5.3 and Lightroom 2.3 Release Candidates are now available on Adobe Labs. The release includes new camera support for the following models:

• Nikon D3X
• Olympus E-30

The Lightroom update addresses some reported problems:

• In the Windows 64-bit version of Lightroom an sFTP upload process could cause Lightroom to crash
• Slideshows could return to the first image randomly during playback
• A memory leak could cause Lightroom to crash while attempting to process files with local adjustments
• Canon EOS 5D Mk II sRAW files could process with artifacts in Lightroom 2.2
• Lightroom 2.2 could cause disc burning to fail for Windows customers

Lightroom 2.3 now provides language support for Chinese (Simplified),
Chinese (Traditional), Dutch,
Italian,
Korean,
Portuguese (Brazilian),
Spanish,
